Curing the Halloween Hangover
By Esmeralda Suarez of Lawndale’s Club Heal the Bay
Even though Halloween is a time to have fun and go trick or treating, the ocean and its marine organisms might not really enjoy the fact that candy wrappers end up in their homes. At 9 o’clock in the morning on Sunday November 1st, a day after Halloween, the Lawndale Heal the Bay Club members cleaned up the Lawndale Library Community Center.
Since there had a Halloween festival on the previous evening, we saw it as the perfect chance to clean up the mess left behind by festival participants. From band aids to candy wrappers, and food leftovers to Halloween masks, we ended up picking up about 200 pounds of trash. Words cannot describe how much trash was piled up everywhere. It was on the grass, in the bushes and trees, and surrounded the trash cans. We even got some of the people in the community to start cleaning with us. As a club we have learned that during Halloween, as well as every day, we should not be LITTER BUGS! As a club, we are striving to be the solution to ocean pollution one step at a time!
